Can Spirit cleanse New York nightlife soul? To the grizzled veterans of clubland, a nightclub for the "mind, body, and soul" probably sounds as absurd as a spiritually minded peep show. They'll likely get an even bigger kick out of the fact that the outfit in question is in the space formerly occupied by Twilo and Sound Factory, two clubs whose chakras could only be described as very far from aligned. To his great credit, Spirit owner Robert Wootton understands the holistic challenges that lie ahead. "Actually, we did bring in two feng shui experts," Wootton forged ahead anyway, and the dance-club portion of spirit, called body, does not offer standard nightclub fare. Asked to assess Spirit's chances in the lifeless New York nightlife scene, Wootton improbably tips his hat to his predecessors. "Listen, I don't believe that Twilo, and Sound Factory before it, were successful by accident," he says earnestly. There must have been a positive energy here. I think we're on sacred ground.
